Tbh now is the perfect time- When I die in 0.0 I usually just lost a very expensive battleship 
Go out there, have some fun with frigates and crusiers (thats what I did), get used to it, and remember your corp is there to back you up, dont be afraid to ask for help.

Which region are your friends based in? (Dont worry I wont invade :P )
If it is a region with NPC stations, you can run missions just like in empire (with a bit more danger ;) ).
If your friends control a outpost (Player controled station) or have access to one, then you can base there and go mining/ratting with your friends.
One of the things I did a lot as a noob to 0.0 space was simple explore in a tech 1 armed frigate. Fast it escapes most things, you can get some good exploring done, and might be able to catch the odd shuttle :P
As for soloing money, if you cannot mission, you can rat belt npcs in a ship like a caracal, or a vexor. It takes a while however and only go for smaller class ships (500K bounty battleships, battlecrusiers, etc).
Anyway do it, its well worthwhile, and quite simply noone is ever "ready" for 0.0 space, you just have to get your ass out there and DO it :D

You might as well, that way if things go wrong in 0.0 (Someone else manages to defeat your corp/alliance for example), you have stuff in empire to fall back on.

Or you can make sure you join a corp that fits you, and if that corp doesnt fit you, you dont behave like a utter idiot when you decide to leave.
